Snakes play a very important role in the social and religious lives of Indians.  India is a country of farmers whose lively hood depend on the control of rodents and other pests.  Snakes play a very important role in maintain the ecosystem in favor of the farmers.  Shakes are worshiped in India and Cobras more so.  It is believed that if a human were to kill a cobra, the dead snake would preserve the image of its killer in its eyes, and its partner would then see it and come to take revenge.  Cobras are hence immediately cremated upon death.   A coin is placed in their mouth along with a little milk before it is cremated.  It is also believed that sin of killing a snake could be passed on to the killers future generations.
